Restrain this

I always said England's support during the recent wars was an example of a restraining alliance.

"Christopher Meyer said that fear explained why Prime Minister Tony Blair chose to stand with US President George W. Bush in his decision to invade Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks -- to temper his aggressive battle plans."

Well, that's nice of the Brits, but it seems rather pretentious to claim that America would have nuked Afghanistan (not withstanding the fringe Republican candidates' recent comments), and that Britain had to tag alone to restrain us.

Notice also that even though the U.K. formed a restraining alliance with the U.S. in Afghanistan and Iraq, it failed to visibly restrain U.S. behaviour. I wonder what are the benefits of such an alliance for each side. Surely, Britain did not become allied out of selfless reasons alone as it professes. On the other hand, what if anything did the U.S. gain from this alliance?

well, isn't Britain a very powerful nation that could benefit from such an alliance by showing the "terrorists" that the aggressor ( the U.S.) will back them up in the case of Britain being attacked by terrorists (which it was)?
