Gaza, Gaza, Gaza

Here is an interesting NYTimes article on the war in Gaza and the tricks of urban combat. This conflict is hard to cover since both sides are using the media to cover up their activities. While I don’t support war at all, this article at least explains why Israel would attack civilian neighborhoods and schools.
“Hamas, with training from Iran and Hezbollah, has used the last two years to turn Gaza into a deadly maze of tunnels, booby traps and sophisticated roadside bombs. Weapons are hidden in mosques, schoolyards and civilian houses, and the leadership’s war room is a bunker beneath Gaza’s largest hospital, Israeli intelligence officials say.”

Upon reading your post, I couldn't help but to think about chapters 14-15 from the Morganthau book, more specifically the sections covering morals and ethics. While on an individual basis, the thought of using these civilian structures as military pseudo-bunkers (and in the case of the hospital, a blatant attempt to use it as a deterrent) is reprehensible, in terms of an overall strategy in war, if you believe that your enemy won't attack a "civilian" structure in an attempt to kill you, why not try it? Also, I would tend to believe that it would be a bit easier to garner international sympathy when you can point to examples of dead children, destroyed hospitals, schools and homes and say "Look what they've done." Sadly, the average person probably wouldn't look into the story enough to see exactly WHY those sites had been chosen as targets.

When discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, people have a tendency to fall into any of the 2 extremes. Either the Jews are victims, doing nothing more than protecting their homeland, or vice-verse, the Arabs chose to die quick rather than slow, to avoid humiliation.

I think both sides have it all wrong, their backward biblical mentality is what causes this behavior: eye for an eye.

Israel is stupid for turning world opinion against itself by doing what it wants, Hamas is idiotic for provoking the Israeli reaction and giving them a free hand in military operation, giving an alibi.

Both sides act as if the conflict is in the best interest of both parties involved, what's going on here?

I think US needs to step back and take a neutral stand, use sticks and carrots mehtod. Something for something. Israel wants 3 more billions, let them work for it.
Palestine wants more aid, let them earn it.

The other option is to continue taking one side and thus let both sides end up blind. Eye for an eye. They are nearly blind now.

I recommend this book if you want to learn why US is giving unquestioned support to Israel:
http://www.amazon.com/Israel-Lobby-U-S-Foreign-Policy/dp/0374531501/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232385983&sr=8-1
It is written by a prof. of Political Science at University of Chicago.

The book dispels once and for all, the myth that opposing actions of the Israeli government means same as being anti-Semitic.

Another good book, written by President Carter:

Both books made a big fuss lately, I hope this will be a gradual start of policy change in the Middle East. All eyes on Obama!
